Why I built Clearpath

I have worked with hundreds of federal, Department of War, and university technology transfer offices—from billion-dollar national laboratories to regional universities with one licensing officer and a filing cabinet. I have also spoken with hundreds of inventors across those organizations.

The consistent hope was simple: they wanted their technologies to be seen, evaluated, and used where the evidence supported a path forward. The technology transfer officers and IP managers representing that work understood their portfolios, but often had more opportunities than their teams could fully assess and pursue. Capacity was one barrier among many, alongside evidence gaps, technical readiness, market fit, funding, and the difficulty of reaching the right organization.

Every technology deserves an informed decision about what happens next.

Clearpath gives technology owners and the teams representing them additional commercialization capacity. We assess opportunities, identify prospective buyers and licensees, prepare positioning and run approved outreach. Customers receive the research, contacts and campaign record, with our team carrying the work forward.

We support technology transfer offices, federal laboratories, IP brokerages, corporate IP teams, inventors, and innovation organizations. The work can begin with one technology or a defined portfolio.

Our software accelerates the research and initial analysis. We review the evidence, identify gaps and develop a recommendation. Target companies are ranked by evidence of potential fit; outreach helps establish whether there is actual interest.

What we help customers accomplish

Clearpath combines hands-on commercialization work with proprietary software to help customers move from an initial question to a documented next step.
  1. 01

    Assess and prioritize

Examine IP position, market opportunity, and capital readiness, with reasons to advance, strengthen, or set aside an opportunity.

  2. 02

    Identify potential counterparties

Rank prospective buyers, licensees, and partners; identify relevant decision-makers; and document evidence of potential fit.

  3. 03

    Run approved outreach

Prepare positioning and materials, execute authorized campaigns, track responses, and follow up with prospective counterparties.

  4. 04

    Equip the customer’s team

Provide research reports, target companies, available contact details, outreach materials, response history, and recommended next steps.

Customers retain control of relationships, negotiations, and transaction decisions. Clearpath performs outreach only with written authorization.

Experience behind the work

Justin Mahan · Founder and CEO

Before founding Clearpath, I served for twenty years in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a Senior Noncommissioned Officer. My work included nuclear security systems, tactical communications, global engineering installations, and technical instruction. It showed me how mission requirements, operational constraints, and procurement decisions affect whether a technology is adopted.

I later served as Head of Technology Partnerships at a corporate consulting firm, leading technology scouting, commercial diligence, accelerator, and venture-development work with federal laboratories, universities, startups, corporate innovation teams, and defense partners. That prior work included programs involving the Department of War, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and the national laboratory system.

I hold an MBA and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Arizona. I founded Clearpath and built CompassIP from that side of the table.
